Hydro-Ecological Mapping in the East Pilbara

A New Benchmark for Satellite-Based Environmental Intelligence

Project Snapshot

  • Client: Confidential
  • Partners: FrontierSI, Curtin University
  • Expertise: Satellite Earth Observation, Environmental Monitoring, Geospatial Analytics

The Challenge

In the East Pilbara, surface water and vegetation dynamics are critical indicators of ecosystem health and groundwater interaction. Yet traditional field surveys and aerial monitoring only capture snapshots in time, leaving large gaps in understanding how inland water bodies and groundwater-dependent vegetation (GDV) respond to climate variability and land-use change.

The client needed a consistent and reliable view of water and vegetation trends across thousands of square kilometres. The goal was to build a time-series dataset to improve environmental assessments, monitoring, and rehabilitation planning.

The FrontierSI Solution

FrontierSI worked directly with the client to deliver two first-of-their-kind Earth observation products for the East Pilbara:

  1. Inland Water Mapping (2016–2024) – a regional-scale, 10-metre resolution dataset built from Sentinel-2 imagery to track the extent and frequency of waterbodies over time.
  2. Groundwater Dependent Vegetation (GDV) Mapping – Seasonal and composite vegetation layers that show how vegetation health and groundwater reliance change between wet and dry periods.

Together, these complementary products create a unified picture of water and vegetation dynamics (hydro-ecological change) – providing decision-ready data for environmental management, compliance, and research.

Our Approach

  • Processed and analysed eight years of Sentinel-2 imagery (2016–2024) to generate multi-season and multi-year datasets at 10-metre resolution.
  • Developed a novel cloud-masking workflow, overcoming the limitations of standard Sentinel-2 Fmask by integrating S2Cloudless and custom logic to remove cloud and shadow artefacts.
  • Mapped inundation frequency to enable classification of inland pools under the Australian National Aquatic Ecosystem (ANAE) framework.
  • Created wet, dry, and composite GDV models to characterise vegetation persistence and identify areas of potential groundwater dependency.
  • Validated outputs against field data and known hydrological features to ensure accuracy, transparency, and regulatory confidence.

The Result

The project produced a comprehensive hydro-ecological mapping suite that captures both short-term changes and long-term trends across the East Pilbara.

Inland Water Mapping reveals how waterbodies expand and contract through wet and dry cycles, while GDV Mapping highlights how vegetation responds to groundwater and seasonal rainfall.

Together, they provide a powerful evidence base to:

  • Support environmental approvals and compliance reporting
  • Enhance mine water and rehabilitation planning; and
  • Inform regional ecosystem and groundwater management strategies.

The Impact

  • Improved environmental intelligence across vast, data-sparse regions.
  • Reduced monitoring costs and risks through repeatable, satellite-based methods.
  • Strengthened regulatory alignment by supporting ANAE classification and consistent GDV assessment.
  • Enabled data-driven decision-making, turning years of imagery into actionable insights for sustainable development.

FrontierSI continues to partner with industry and government to deliver scalable, science-backed geospatial solutions that make complex environmental data accessible and useful.

Looking Ahead

Building on these results, FrontierSI is developing a cloud-enabled, scalable monitoring platform that integrates inland water and vegetation dynamics with broader environmental indicators such as fire history, climate trends, and biodiversity metrics.
This next phase will provide regulators and industry with real-time, regional-scale environmental insights, driving greater transparency, resilience, and sustainability across Australia’s resource landscapes.
