The challenge
Queensland’s Greater Whitsunday region (incorporating the local government areas of Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday) is entering a period of rapid transformation, with many industries, including agriculture and mining and METS, seeking new ways to improve productivity, sustainability, and resilience.
To fully capture emerging opportunities, from precision agriculture to mining safety and decarbonisation, regional businesses need stronger capability in geospatial tools and data-driven decision-making.
From Earth observation to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT), local producers and businesses are eager to adopt digital tools but often lack accessible information, practical guidance, and confidence in selecting and applying the right technologies. With leadership from the Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3), a coordinated effort is now underway to build awareness, demonstrate real-world applications, and strengthen spatial skills across the region’s workforce.
The FrontierSI solution
FrontierSI was engaged by GW3 as a strategic partner to help build the region’s understanding of how geospatial and Earth observation technologies can drive growth across agriculture and METS. This work built on FrontierSI’s earlier delivery of the Greater Whitsunday Geospatial Hub Economic Impact Assessment report, which outlined the regional opportunity and provided a foundation for capability-building activities.
To support the next phase, FrontierSI and GW3 collaborated to design and deliver two targeted, interactive workshops (Agtech and Smart METS) to translate strategy into practical action.
Our approach included:
- Building on prior evidence: Using insights from the earlier economic impact report to shape content around the most promising regional opportunities.
- Designing applied learning: Developing clear, accessible presentations demonstrating how geospatial tools address real agricultural and METS challenges.
- Engaging industry experts and regional partners: Regional businesses and producers were invited to provide their own experiences to ensure the workshops reflected real on-ground needs.
- Facilitating interactive, problem-focused discussions: Encouraged participants to explore use cases, share challenges, and identify pathways for adoption and elicit input to guide future capability-building initiatives.
The impact
The workshops delivered by FrontierSI created immediate and practical value for the Greater Whitsunday region, helping turn strategic intent into tangible and on-the-ground capability uplift.
