The Australian fishing industry faces significant challenges due to its reliance on energy-intensive practices and volatile diesel prices. Research shows a clear link between fishing methods, operational efficiency, and energy consumption. With growing fuel dependency and the prospect of further price increases, advancing energy-efficient fishing technologies is urgently needed.

The project was a collaboration between Mezo Research and FrontierSI.
The Solution
Mezo Research is proposing a solution called Mezo Flow Catch Map, as a digital platform integrating data analytics, mapping and visualisation, and predictive modelling to support efficient fishing operations. The potential of such a platform has been demonstrated through successful collaboration with active commercial fisheries using a demonstration version. The team now aims to build an advanced system leveraging cutting-edge technologies and scientifically proven methods.
As a technical partner of the project, FrontierSI conducted a comprehensive review of latest geospatial technologies, earth observation data and spatial analytics that can be used to accurately monitor the marine environment.
Impact
Through the project, we demonstrated the feasibility of an advanced Mezo Flow Catch Map platform, integrating real-time environmental data in a user-friendly interface, that can effectively support commercial fishing operations onshore and offshore. Such a platform, once deployed, will revolutionise fisheries management by enhancing the energy efficiency and sustainability of commercial fishing operations.
