FrontierSI promotes Geospatial careers to youth at GeoTech 2024

The RMIT Space Industry Hub, Geography Teachers Association of Victoria (GTAV), SheMaps and FrontierSI proudly presented GeoTech 2024 from 8-10 July, a significant initiative aimed at developing talent and skills within the geospatial industry. Supported by the Australian Federal Government, GeoTech 2024 was a 3-day event designed to immerse female and non-binary Year 9-12 students in the comprehensive study of the geospatial industry. These students were exposed to the global potential of geospatial technologies and engaged in collaborative problem-solving alongside industry professionals. The program includes keynote speeches, hands-on workshops, field visits, and a geocaching scavenger hunt, providing a multifaceted approach to learning.

The program addresses the challenges of keeping pace with rapidly evolving geospatial technology, adapting to new business practices, and complying with emerging legislative and regulatory changes. By involving industry experts and role models from leading organizations such as Esri Australia, FrontierSI, VicMap, SheMaps, James Cook University, Australian Spatial Analytics and RMIT University, GeoTech developed current and relevant geospatial awareness in future workforce, preparing female and non-binary high school students for the demands of the industry.

FrontierSI presented a keynote on diverse career pathways for female and non-binary women in the sector, showcasing seven short videos telling the stories of some of our staff’s journeys to get to where they are now. We also ran an exciting, interactive participatory careers panel discussion, and facilitated an engaging participatory geocaching event for the students.
