FrontierSI has been recognised for its achievements in geospatial innovation, winning two key categories at the 2024 WA Geospatial Excellence Awards. The awards were announced on 8 November as part of the WA Geospatial Conference.

FrontierSI received the Environment and Sustainability Award for the ENVestigator Toolkit, developed in collaboration with a consortium of mining companies and regulators.

Paula Fievez, FrontierSI’s Chief Business Officer, said the ENVestigator toolkit uses satellite imagery and advanced models to monitor the environmental impact of mining on vegetation. “It provides near-real time monitoring and access to historical satellite data, facilitating better environmental management,” Ms Fievez said.

The Community Impact Award was also awarded to FrontierSI, alongside NGIS and CSIRO, for work on the Vanuatu Climate Futures Portal.

The award judges commended the collaborative approach to the ENVestigator toolkit and its potential to become a critical resource for environmental monitoring in Australia.

For a demonstration of the ENvestigator toolkit get in touch with FrontierSI’s Resources Lead, Laura Spelbrink.

FrontierSI’s Environment Sector Lead, Annmarie Mabarrack said the portal provides critical climate data to support decision-making in Vanuatu’s government and local communities. “It is designed to aid planning in sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and infrastructure, helping Vanuatu adapt to the impacts of climate change,” Ms Mabarrack said.

The award judges acknowledged the project’s role in improving long-term climate resilience and its potential as a model for other Pacific nations.

These state-level wins position FrontierSI as a finalist in the Oceanic competition, to be announced at the Locate Conference in Brisbane in April 2025.
