Unlocking the future: how geospatial technologies could add $1.46b to the Greater Whitsunday economy

The report provides to GW3 a strategy and roadmap for addressing geospatial and earth observation opportunities in the combined Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday region of Queensland.
GW3 Chief Executive Officer Ms Kylie Porter said: “The report identifies the benefits of leveraging geospatial and earth observation technologies to support the growth of the Greater Whitsunday region. Geospatial technologies are quietly shaping the world’s economic future. With every satellite image, every map, and every data point, we can build a more resilient and prosperous regional economy for the next generation.”
The report found that the deployment of geospatial and earth observation technologies and the eventual implementation of a Greater Whitsunday Geospatial Hub could lead to the realisation of up to $1.46 billion annual added value to the gross regional product by 2034.
FrontierSI Chief Executive Officer Mr Graeme Kernich said: “Geospatial and Earth observation technologies are gaining recognition for their growing value in regional Australia. These technologies offer major economic and strategic benefits across sectors such as mining, agriculture, and infrastructure. To fully unlock this potential, it’s crucial to foster a digitally skilled workforce and support regional businesses in collaborating on geospatial initiatives.”
