FrontierSI Data Driven Insights Catapult Drone Technology at Melbourne Water
Since 2017, drone technology has become an integral part of Melbourne Water operations. While the technology has been around since the beginning of the 20th century, the real smarts come from how the observations can create and push data-driven insights.
Melbourne Water is now using such insights to manage vegetations surrounding wetlands thanks to an algorithm developed with FrontierSI. The machine learning algorithm uses drone imagery to automate counting and detection of plant species surrounding Melbourne Water’s wetlands. Developed in collaboration with FrontierSI, it provides crucial environmental intelligence quickly and relatively cheaply.
